La Habra police DUI checkpoint deemed a success

The La Habra Police Department Traffic Unit’s DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Aug. 22 screened nearly 700 cars and sent three people to jail for driving under the influence.

“Anytime we can take a drunk driver off the road, then we have done our job in improving the safety and welfare of the public,” said Chief Jerry Price.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints provide the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.

LHPD will be conducting additional checkpoints throughout the year as part of an ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon the city streets and highways. The next checkpoint is planned for Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, from approximately 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., at an undisclosed location in La Habra.

These checkpoints are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1!
