Oh, alcohol — helping people make poor choices for centuries.

Huntington Beach police witnessed a stellar example of how alcohol prompts bad decisions at about 10:40 p.m. Thursday night when a suspected drunken driver decided to take a little drive on the city’s pier.

Surveillance video shows a vehicle charging through the intersection at Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street, gaining a little air as it entered Pier Plaza and coming down with a splash of sparks before disappearing from the frame and driving the concrete stretch toward Ruby’s Diner.

Witnesses told police the car drove to the end of the pier before turning around.

When the driver ended his short ocean-front joyride, three Huntington Beach police cars were waiting for him.

The 27-year-old Anaheim man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and police said nobody was hurt during the incident.

Although in this case pedestrians on the pier and the driver came out unscathed, this scenario could have been devastating, police said. Huntington Beach police are using the video to remind residents of the dangers of drinking and driving.
