Huntington Beach Police Lt. Mitch O’Brien was working as the watch commander around midnight when the calls started coming – a sea lion was in distress on the beach.

“The report was the poor thing is dying from a fishing line around its neck,” he said.

O’Brien started working the phones attempting to find someone who specializes in rescuing sea life.

When that didn’t work, O’Brien enlisted the help of a few police officers.

They freed the sea lion, earning cheers from onlookers.

Check out the video of O’Brien recounting efforts in late May to rescue “Sparky” the sea lion.
