Man convicted of assaulting female jogger in case that sprung from quick APD response

A quick response by Anaheim Police officers led to the arrest and conviction of a man who attacked and attempted to sexually assault a 24-year old-woman who was jogging on a trail.

Mariano Orlando Montano, 59, of Anaheim was found guilty by a jury Wednesday, June 21 of assault with the intent to commit a sexual offense and assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury.

Sentencing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 4 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.

Montano faces up to 11 years in prison.

On Dec. 10, 2013, the victim was jogging on a trail around a reservoir in Anaheim Hills.

When she slowed down to walk, Montano jogged up to the victim and tried to talk to her.

He then tackled the woman to the ground and climbed on top of her.

The victim kicked and screamed and fought to get away and had a tooth knocked out during the struggle.

When she began to scream, Montano covered her mouth.

When Montano reached for his pants, intending to commit a sexual assault, the woman kicked him and escaped.

The victim ran to nearby home and called 911.

Anaheim Police responded immediately, found Montano on the trail and arrested him.
