Where are they now? Catching up with Anaheim Fire & Rescue recruits

Eight Anaheim Fire & Rescue recruits are making their way through firefighter paramedic probation.

Last month, the group was undergoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training at the North Net Training facility in Anaheim.

“Once they pass their six-month probation, we bring them back here to the training tower and we do two weeks of just strictly medical training,” said Dave Berry, the paramedic captain and the emergency medical services (EMS) manager for Anaheim Fire & Rescue.

The recruits come from all over the county and Anaheim Fire & Rescue looks to hire those who already have a firefighter paramedic background before they come to Anaheim.

“We do all of our firefighter training first and then put them through six months of firefighter probation where they learn all the firefighting skills,” Berry said. “They’re able to go on medical aids and kind of vet out our system and see how it is specifically in Anaheim, see where the hospitals are and see how the equipment works.”

When it comes to medical training, Anaheim Fire & Rescue puts recruits through monitor training and the medical director comes along with EMS nurses to do training.

“So far everybody’s doing good, I mean, they’re all solid firefighter paramedics already,” Berry said.  “This training is just a good way just to orient them to the Anaheim way of doing things.”
