When people think of first responders, they generally think of police and fire. But to police and fire officials, “first responders” has a broader meaning.
On Wednesday, Beverly Hills PD and Beverly Hills FD joined West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station, LA County Fire, LA City Fire, Los Angeles PD and others in thanking the first responders of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center whose tireless work continues to keep the community safe.
Police patrol cars, motorcycles and fire trucks rolled en masse to Cedars’ emergency department on Gracie Allen Drive with lights flashing and sirens blaring to applaud the doctors and nurses, janitors and maintenance staff, who are on the front lines of the COVID-19 epidemic.

“These are the people who put their lives on the line, whose work is every bit as dangerous right now, and we wanted to let them know just how appreciative we are,” said BHPD Sgt. Sean Smollen. “We understand what they’re being subjected to right now and the demands being placed on them and their families. The amount of gratitude we have towards them is something that is difficult to put into words.”
Instead, it was put into applause. For several minutes, fire fighters and police officers – donning face masks – cheered the hospital workers, creating a profound scene of genuine gratitude.
“This is what our country is made of,” Smollen said. “People working together, taking care of one another. Thank God we have them.”
