The convicted felon talked his way into a Garden Grove home, pulled a knife, stabbed the homeowner in front of her husband and then wrestled with him over control of a shotgun.

The felon had gained control of the weapon when police officers arrived.

The harrowing tale is among the 750 news and feature stories, opinion pieces, podcasts and videos we’ve published since launching Behind the Badge OC in July last year.

As we celebrate our anniversary, we thought we’d share some of our top stories. Over the next 30 days, we will highlight here and on social media 30 of our most viewed stories, including the tale of the Garden Grove break-in.

“It was a very serious situation, and I responded to it,” said the officer, who ended the drama when he fatally shot the suspect. “Every police officer with my training and experience would have done the same thing. I am thankful I and the other officers were able to control a crime in progress where a person was being hurt.

“I’m certain he had really bad intentions — that he would have killed (the couple). I’m thankful to have helped them.”

Among the goals of BehindtheBadgeOC.com: Report stories and share perspectives that aren’t covered in the traditional media.

Police and firefighting is more complex than ever. Through our reporting, we hope to shed light on what police officers and firefighters do, why they do it, and who they are.

Thank you for visiting our site, sharing our content and engaging with us. We look forward to doing everything we can to continue to serve our readers, listeners and viewers and the community.

We’ll kick off the countdown with this tale from Westminster PD: No. 30: Westminster officer prays for happy ending in baby-not-breathing call
