We arrived at Bakersfield Police Department’s S.W.A.T (Special Weapons and Tactics) school tucked away in the outskirts of downtown shortly after 8 a.m. We had driven past the city streets, supermarkets, and convenience stores until the landscape turned into peach orchards and open space. As my colleague and I stepped out of the car, we saw a crowd of police officers dressed in camouflage, wearing bullet proof vests, and scrambling on the roof of a two-story building.
