Diners at the La Habra Red Robin on Imperial Highway this Thursday shouldn’t become alarmed if their waiter looks like Police Chief Jerry Price.
Because Price will be joining other members of his department to raise money for the Orange County Special Olympics through the annual Tip a Cop event on Oct. 16 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Red Robin restaurant.
The chief and four to five officers will pair up with food servers to raise money and each customer will receive a separate envelope to donate to the Special Olympics. There will also be Special Olympics athletes on hand that evening to talk to customers about the events and medals they have won.
“We try to make it fun,” said Community Service Officer II Christina Nunez, who helps coordinate the event.” If someone makes a donation of $20, we give them a T-shirt. We also are going to hand out cop car pins that light up.”
Nunez, who works in traffic as an accident investigator, said the department also does a drawing for prizes that can raise extra money for the cause.
“Last year, we raised a couple hundred dollars extra and all that goes straight to Special Olympics,” she said.
In total, she said the department raised about $4,000 for the athletes, who are part of the Sharks Swim Team.
Nunez said those who want to help can attend any local Red Robin to make a donation. For more information about Tip a Cop in La Habra click here.
