Doctors gave Adela Jauregui, 11, the devastating news a few weeks ago: she needed emergency surgery right away.
The little girl who has suffered with brain cancer for nearly a decade refused to miss her promotion ceremony at Walter Elementary School.
Touched by her story, Anaheim Police Chief Raul Quezada and Fire and Rescue Chief Randy Bruegman attended the ceremony to cheer her on. The chiefs posed for a photo with the smiling girl.
Adela ended up having the surgery Monday.
Sadly, her struggle is far from over.
Fluid build-up led her back into surgery Friday.
“We are trying to hang in there for the sake of our beautiful Adela and our little Olivia,” wrote her mother, Norma.
At the police department last week, officers gathered dozens of cards and notes of support and prayers for the family.
Norma Jauregi said the support has meant a lot to her and her family.
“We are so grateful (for) how the community has shown huge support during this difficult time,” she wrote.
A few years ago, Adela lit the Disneyland ride, “It’s a Small World” to mark the beginning of the holiday season.
