Bakersfield was recently ranked as the country’s most livable big city for people earning minimum wage by the online moving-service marketplace Move.org.
According to the report, someone making $14 per hour would need to work 52 hours and 24 minutes per month in order to afford a one-bedroom apartment in Bakersfield, which averages to about $733 a month.
Bakersfield was ranked no. 1 on the list, followed by Tucson ($12.15 per hour), Fresno ($14 per hour), Detroit ($9.87), Cleveland ($8.80), and Stockton ($14 per hour).
In the report Atlanta was reported as the least affordable big city for minimum-wage earners, someone making the minimum of $7.25 per hour would have to work 177 hours in a month to afford a single-bedroom apartment, according to the report by Move.org which was released on June 18, 2021.
At Bakersfield Police Department, the department continues to recruit new officers onto the force and is also seeking non-sworn employees .Many of these positions exceed the minimum wage requirements and provide an ample living wage for families and individuals looking to relocate to a big city, with a small-town personality
Some of the available positions include Fleet Service Worker ($20 to $25 an hour), Service Maintenance Worker ($18.52 to $22.50 an hour), Code Enforcement Officer ($5,835.96 to $6,405.53 monthly), Animal Control Officer ($2,675.99 to $3,266.84 monthly) and Clerk Typist ($2,547.65 to $3,097.29.)
“We are always looking for hard working individuals to join our department and be a part of growing community,” Assistant Chief Mike Hale said. “We have a lot of job opportunities for people with diverse backgrounds, levels of education and experience.”
