Male pedestrian, 84, fatally struck in crosswalk in Garden Grove

An elderly pedestrian in a crosswalk was struck and killed late Wednesday morning in Garden Grove, and police are asking witnesses to come forward.

Police said in a news release they still are trying to determine if the driver of a van who struck the 84-year-old man at 11:34 a.m. committed a crime.

The victim was described as a male Vietnamese who lived in Westminster. His name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The man was crossing Brookhurst Street eastbound on the south side of Garden Grove Boulevard when the van, approaching northbound on Brookhurst Street, struck him while in the right lane to turn eastbound onto Garden Grove from Brookhurst, police said.

The victim was dragged about 50 feet before the van came to a stop on Garden Grove Boulevard just east of the intersection.

The pedestrian was transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the van remained at the scene to be interviewed by the Garden Grove Police Neighborhood Traffic Unit.

The scene was closed through 2 p.m. to all traffic traveling eastbound on Garden Grove Boulevard from Brookhurst Street.
