A Westminster police officer who helped a frightened mother and daughter find shelter after dealing with a domestic issue in their home was recently recognized for his efforts, police said.

A mother and daughter on Aug. 5 asked Officer Brian Perez for help finding a place to stay saying they were afraid to return to their Huntington Beach home.

Perez made several calls to find a shelter for the family, but he could not find a place that had room.

Perez then drove to three different hotels before finding one that had an open room for the mother and daughter, police said.

The victims did not have any money, so Perez paid for it out of his own pocket.

Perez was awarded a report of recognition from Police Chief Kevin Baker on Aug. 21.
