A man suspected of shooting two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies after fleeing a drunken driving checkpoint is in custody.

Police said the shooting happened at about 10:50 p.m. Thursday night when deputies noticed a man driving erratically in an attempt to avoid a DUI checkpoint in Bellflower, according to ABC News.

A motor officer tried to stop the driver near Lakewood Boulevard and Oak Street when the suspect exited his vehicle and opened fire.

Police said the motor officer returned fire, and was struck in the exchange, ABC reported.

The man then got back in his car and drove to a residential neighborhood, where a second shooting occurred. Another deputy was shot, and the suspect again fled the scene.

A third shooting happened in an attempt to stop the suspect, and no deputies were shot or injured in that incident.

Police set up a four-block perimeter, started a search and found the man in a residence in the area.

The two deputies who were shot are in serious, but stable condition.
